The treasured mythical African story of the Goddess Zaouli is about love, jealousy, redemption, and compassion. Zaouli Dj'la is a goddess who comes of age for marriage. Her father, the Lion, deems only the Bird and the Serpent worthy of her hand, and organizes a race to decide which one will win her. Rather than rushing to Zaouli after completing the difficult two-day race, both Bird and Serpent seek immediate food and water, ignoring Zaouli and the true intention of the race. Witnessing her suitors' selfishness, Zaouli flees into the forest, suffering from a broken heart. A disloyal friend leaves her there to die and Zaouli returns in spirit to her father and her friend in love and compassion.
The Goddess Zaouli comes truly to life with intense and spellbinding choreography, brilliant costumes from the Ivory Coast, and accompaniment of outstanding and energetic African drumming. The dance troupe, Afrikylolo, is performing in New England for the first time. Visit the troupe's website at www.Afrikylolo.com This performance is a captivating journey into African dance, culture and art, providing an amazing and authentic African experience.
