Mechanics Hall 160th Anniversary Jewish Federation of Central Mass

Mechanics Hall is celebrating our 160th Anniversary of being a cultural cornerstone in the Worcester community. As part of this celebration we are partnering with the Jewish Federation to bring the Young@Heart Chorus™ here on Sunday, October 15, 2017.

The Young@Heart Chorus™ is a vocal group from Northampton, MA, that has earned an international reputation for its unique interpretations of pop songs by such groups as the Beatles, Sonic Youth, the Ramones, and the Clash. Twenty-two senior citizens, average age 80, are directed by Bob Cilman. Their enthusiastic a cappella renditions of well-known rock & roll tunes are fun, poignant and inspirational!

Opening for Young@Heart will be the high school and college a cappella group winners of WECappella, a Worcester Education Collaborative fundraiser hosted at Mechanics Hall to support excellence in Worcester Public Schools. "Hound Sound" from Assumption College and "Quadrivium" from Burncoat High School will showcase the strength of Worcester’s rising musical talent.

What started out in 1982 at a Western Massachusetts elderly housing project to joyfully pass the time instead of passing before your time has developed into the stereotype-defying, genre-bending, generation-crossing musical extravaganza better known as The Young@Heart Chorus. From The New York Times to TIME, Jay Leno to The Daily Show and stars of the hit indie documentary, Young@Heart, this group of spirited seniors, ranging in age from 73-90, has toured from Northampton to New Zealand, Europe to Japan, proving it’s “possible to grow old without growing boring” (The Dartmouth).

In collaboration with No Theater, Young@Heart has performed in the trilogy of theater shows – Road to Heaven, Road to Nowhere, and End of the Road – at The R Festival in Rotterdam, the Manchester International Festival, London International Festival of Theatre (LIFT), the Zurich Theater Spektakel, Spielzeit’Europa in Berlin, the Dublin Theater Festival, The Melbourne International Festival of the Arts, and many others.

The Chorus has performed its live concert Alive and Well at venues around the world including the Wilshire Theater, Los Angeles; Capitol Theatre, Salt Lake City; Wells Fargo Theater, Denver; Beacon Theatre, New York; Warner Theater, Washington, DC; Orchard Hall in the Bunkamara Theatre, Tokyo, Civic Theatre, Auckland, New Zealand, and at the Newport Folk Festival.

The Walker George documentary Young@Heart, originally broadcast on Channel 4 television in the UK, won two Rose d’Or awards, the LA Film Festival Audience Award, screened at Sundance and was released in the US by Fox Searchlight. The film has since been released in the UK, France, Belgium, Holland, Switzerland, Germany, New Zealand, Portugal, and Japan, winning the Audience Award at the Sydney Film Festival, the Paris Cinema International Film Festival, Ghent Film Festival, Atlanta Film Festival, Bergen International Film Festival, Warsaw Film Festival, among others.
